8-2- متن:In major industries such as oil, gas, chemicals, petrochemicals, process, etc. one of the most important operations on materials, is temperature change. One of the most used methods for changing materials temperature, is heat exchanging in which by a device called Heat exchanger, heat is transferred from a liquid or gas to another liquid or gas. The base of functioning in Heat exchangers is according to the passage of two fluids in the vicinity of each other. To prevent mixing two fluids with each other, a metal wall is used.

Types of heat exchangers are listed as follows:

1- Boiler: is used to produce steam.

2- Super heater: is used for drying and preparing saturated steam.

3- Pre heater or economizer: is used to heat boiler’s feed water by hot gases moving from the boiler to the chimney and extends water temperature to 450 Fahrenheit degree. In this way, instead of wasting and releasing in circumference, steam’s thermal energy returns to the system. This, has three basic advantages which are: economizing in heating costs, reduction in the usage of fossil fuels and thereby reduction in air pollution and global warming due to the lower fuel consumption and reuse of steam thermal energy to heat water.

4- Ray boiler: is an exchanger which heats materials derived from distillation towers by vapor or hot oil and converts a part of the materials into steam.

5- The heater: is an exchanger which only increases the temperature of the fluid, without the fluid being changed.

6- Evaporator: is an exchanger that converts liquid into vapor.

7- Cooler: is an exchanger that is used for cooling and reducing fluid’s temperature without the fluid being changed.

8- condenser: This heat exchanger’s task is to convert the vapor obtained from “separating to liquid” operation and also for saving in boiler’s feeding water, deem steam converts steam turbines output into distilled water and returns it to boiler.

9- cooler or chiller: cools hot materials by liquid propane.

10- Water cooling towers: are made of  latticed wooden floors which are installed horizontally on each other and water is held from top to the bottom and air from bottom to top, and occurs cooling for re-using.

11- Heat exchanger: If the heat exchange is done between two liquids, the device is called HEAT EXCHANGER.

In other words, if any of the fluids doesn’t evaporate or distill, the device is called heat exchanger.


This type of converters are the most common type of heat exchangers in oil industry and has a large heat transfer level per volume unit is occupied. This type of converters with a view to design is divided into two categories: Straight or U-shaped.

In the direct type, a number of tubes are settled in parallel beside each other. In this type, the beginning and end of tubes are surrounded by two holed-plates known as Tube sheets and sides by a cylindrical shell. This shell has two channels in the beginning and end of it for fluid to enter. Also, there are semicircle pages inside the shell that in addition to increase tubes fortification in the shell, changes fluid’s course from straight to spiral.

In the U-shaped type, tubes are like the letter U, so in these exchangers because beginning and the end of the tubes are on one side, there would be a tube sheet only on that side.

The fluid that is held through the tubes is called TUBE SIDE FLUID, and the other fluid that is held out of tubes and inside the shell is called SHELL SIDE FLUID.

Heat exchangers based on the difference in structure, are divided as follows:

– Vessel heat exchanger

-U-shaped heat exchanger

– Heat exchangers with two fixed tubes
